Nice work! (As usual) Especially the way you interweave historical material with an underlying (overarching?) philosophical view: “are we anywhere near intelligent enough to sift the wheat from the chaff, the good from the evil? Our fate hangs in the balance.”

Fascinating and challenging as ever, especially as I spent 20 years, quite a long time ago, in the developing the productive forces Marxist camp. There's a resonance with my situation now. By twist of fate I live in the South of Europe, in the South of Greece, namely agrarian Crete. The threat to the rural, to the Cretan way of life comes insistently and aggressively from the industry of tourism, its commodification of tradition, its celebration of consumption. If I was smart enough I would explore this more in the light of your excellent piece. Thanks again.
